16 in x 20 in Oil on Canvas
This passion piece is losely based on the Gospel of John 20:7 "and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself."
One Easter weekend I had this image come to mind and I just knew it had to be brought to life on canvas. Every element of this painting has meaning--the face cloth of Jesus being folded represents the old creation being retired, calling back to the book of Psalms "like a robe you will roll up, like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same."
The gold robe being draped over Jesus by one of the angels represents new life and his eternal majesty. Even in Jesus' ressurected state you can see the scar in his hand from his crucifixion.
The ivy wrapping around the tomb represents the rampant spreading of the kingdom of God, leading our eyes back to the face of Jesus.
The angel standing in the back left has feminine-like facial features to represent the "feminine" nature of Holy Spirit. Also the flame and alabastar jar in the top right corner is meant to be a nod to Jewish culture and a foreshadowing of the coming Pentacost when "His Spirit shall be poured out on all flesh."
